Stalkaya – Ḵ’elhmáy̓/X̱ápay̓ay exhibition provides a 360° immersive experience to the heart of an ancient forest
North Van Arts’ new exhibition also includes a collection of artwork that explores Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish) people’s relationship to cedar
A new exhibition by North Van Arts is a transportive experience, offering the chance to learn about the Skwxwu7mesh People's relationship to cedar through art.
Stalkaya – Ḵ’elhmáy̓/X̱ápay̓ay runs at CityScape Community ArtSpace from July 24 to September 4.
The show’s title refers to the name of the area of an ancient forest (Stalkaya) followed by the two words for yellow and red cedar.
Sanctuary (by Damien Gillis, Cease Wyss, and Olivier Leroux) is an ecological adventure—and a call to action. Inside a geodesic dome built within CityScape Community ArtSpace, this 360° immersive experience, hosted by Cease Wyss, takes people deep into an ancient forest that is now under threat. Viewers experience a 15-minute auditory mix of music and nature sounds with a wraparound view of the forest.
Alongside this filmic adventure are artwork by Tsawaysia Spukwus and Sesemiya- Tracy Williams. This collection of work, curated by Cease Wyss, explores Skwxwu7mesh (Squamish) people’s relationship to cedar and to the ancient forests that house these sacred trees. Sunshine Coast’s Mark Benson’s largescale photographs are also included in the show.
The exhibition is free. To book a 15-minute slot for up to six people to view the film and for more information, see North Van Arts.
