Cornetto meets the human voice in Early Music Vancouver's On the Breath of Angels, March 3 at Christ Church Cathedral
Prague soprano Hana Blažíková joins forces with musician Bruce Dickey and their Breathtaking Collective
Early Music Vancouver presents On the Breath of Angelss on March 3 at 7:30 pm at Christ Church Cathedral
IF THE WORD “cornetto” has you thinking of delicious Italian pastries, think again: those croissant-like treats got their name from a wind instrument that dates back to the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. In countless paintings and sculptures, they’re depicted being played by angels—a nod to the transcendant beauty of the little horn.
It sounds especially beautiful when it’s interwoven with the human voice, as it will be in an Early Music Vancouver concert celebrating not just works from the 16th and 17th centuries, but new compositions by Ivan Moody and Julian Wachner will explore both this instrumental-vocal duality.
On the cornetto end, Bologna-based virtuoso Bruce Dickey—who has devoted his long career to getting the instrument the historical recognition it deserves—is on hand. Vocally, celebrated Czech soprano Hana Blažíková is blessed with a pure, cornetto-friendly tone.
Together with their aptly named The Breathtaking Collective, they bridge the centuries, with early-music composers Cavalli, Scarlatti, Giacomo Carissimi, as well as the 1889 Erik Satie chanson Les Anges rounding out the program.
