Choreographer Crystal Pite, chef Robert Anthony Clark among Vancouverites named to Order of Canada
Philanthropist Yosef Wosk and others join the Governor-General’s list of 114 new appointees nationwide
DANCE ARTIST Crystal Pite has been named a member of the Order of Canada for “her contributions to contemporary dance, as an innovative choreographer, dancer and director”.
The choreographer has created such internationally famed works as Betroffenheit and Revisor with her Kidd Pivot and the Electric Theatre Company, but she’s also in demand from leading companies like the Paris Opera Ballet, Nederlands Dans Theater, and Sadler’s Wells.
Included in the newly named members today was Vancouver chef Robert Anthony Clark, for his “world-renowned program to help businesses and customers identify and purchase sustainable seafood.” The owner of The Fish Counter, is one of the founders of Vancouver's Spot Prawn Festival and was instrumental in helping the Vancouver Aquarium create the Ocean Wise sustainable-seafood program.
Yosef Wosk was named an officer of the Order of Canada for “his far-reaching contributions to his community as a scholar, educator and writer, and for his generous philanthropy”. In April, the longtime arts supporter donated $100,000 to help British Columbia's artists and cultural community navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Vancouver writer Sandra Djwa was recognized as a member for her promotion of Canadian and Québécois literature, as well as cultural contributions as a teacher, mentor, biographer and critic. Also named was Dr. Stanley Hamilton, an emeritus professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, who has chaired the board of directors of the Arts Club Theatre Company and the BC Arts Council.
