Holiday season in Vancouver isn’t complete without the Arts Umbrella Dance Company’s Mixed Nuts (and Assorted Candies). This year, fans can take in the annual festive highlight from the comfort of home.

A modern, riveting twist on Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Mixed Nuts (and Assorted Candies) features a variety of dance styles from hip-hop, to ballroom, to the classic grand pas-de-deux.

With its flavourful assortment of dance styles making an extra-special holiday treat, the dynamic holiday showcase is traditionally a landmark on the AUDC calendar as a live performance. The dancers are thrilled to still have the chance for the performance in a new way this year, through a special film version of Mixed Nuts (and Assorted Candies).

Presented by Deloitte, the 2020 edition will be available to view online by donation from December 17 to 31.

This engaging and genre-bending film features works by local choreographers and Canadian dancers, including Ballet BC and Kidd Pivot company members.

Arts Umbrella dancers, Vancouver-based choreographers, and emerging artists all combine their talents for one of the most entertaining shows of the holiday season.

The production was filmed following all provincial health and safety guidelines, and the AUDC students’ artistry, passion, and skill shine through.

Arts Umbrella is where young artists from age two to 22 cultivate their creativity in Art & Design, Dance, and Theatre, Music & Film. As a non-profit centre for arts education, the organization believes that art is powerful enough to change children’s lives in incredible ways. When young people connect with the arts, they gain self-confidence, develop self-discipline, and discover creative expression—qualities they carry with them for life. Arts Umbrella has four locations in Vancouver and Surrey, as well as donor-funded programs at schools, community centres, neighbourhood houses, and health-care facilities across Metro Vancouver. It reaches more than 24,000 students every year, with nearly 81 percent participating at little to no cost. In 2021, Arts Umbrella will open the doors to its new home on Granville Island, a 50,000 net-square-foot facility with dedicated spaces for young artists.
