Vancouver New Music’s Parallel 03 shares interactive visuals and soundscapes in new online collaboration and listening party
Parallel 03: Endlings (Raven Chacon and John Dietrich) + collaborators takes place November 28
New Mexico-based musicians Raven Chacon and John Dieterich make up the Endlings.
You’ve never heard anything like it: Vancouver New Music’s Parallel 03 is bringing together a new collaboration among New Mexico-based musicians Raven Chacon and John Dieterich (who form the duo Endlings) and six Vancouver musicians and sound artists for composition and improvisation through inventive cross-platform and anonymous methods.
Endlings’ approach is deeply rooted in improvisation, and they envisioned the collaboration as a way to extend that tack to a larger ensemble and see where it took them.
The eight artists composed, recorded, and arranged material during four months of pandemic-era isolation. They became generators, translators, mistranslators, and filters for each other’s ideas in an incalculable feedback loop of expansive processes.
Now nearing the close of this phase of the project, the artists will share the results in an open online artist chat, collective presentation, and listening party on November 28 at 1:30 pm.
The artists will discuss the recording and composition processes as well as present a preview of a “completed” version of the album, to be released in 2021.
Joining the Endlings’ Chacon (a composer, performer, and installation artist from Fort
Defiance, Navajo Nation, who works as a solo artist, collaborator, and with the ensemble Postcommodity) and John Dietrich (a guitarist and composer known for his work in the band Deerhoof) are Parmela Attariwala, Adrian Avendaño, John Brennan, Elisa Ferrari, Marina Hasselberg and Alanna Ho.
