The Polygon Gallery has unveiled a roster of 22 contemporary works by significant artists in an online art auction in support of its 2021 Exhibition Program.
Bidding is now open at the link here, and will stay open until June 18 at 5 pm.
Works are also on view at The Polygon Gallery site on the Lonsdale waterfront until June 18.
The array includes the kind of strong, photo-based pieces for which the gallery has made its name. They include Sara Cwynar’s blend of still life, assemblage, and studio photography in a vibrant meditation on beauty ideals and modelling. Elsewhere, Krystle Coughlin Silverfox’s photograph Royal Tease plays on the word “royalties” and connotations of the British Commonwealth’s occupation of unceded Indigenous lands; the still life includes Hudson’s Bay napkins, tea china, copper pennies, and a sage wand and abalone shell. Other photo-based artists with work in the show include Steven Shearer, Gabrielle L’Hirondelle Hill, Elizabeth Zvonar, and Evann Siebens.
In other media, Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli, based in West Vancouver, has contributed a colourful print emblazoned with his recurring symbols of the poet and the bird, while Russna Kaur mixes moulding paste, fibre paste, paint, and oil pastel into a thick surface, then scans the image and digitally pulls it apart in Photoshop. Also look for a Ryan Quast sculpture, meticulously built from layers of accumulated paint, alongside Emily Hermant’s textile piece woven from telecommunications wire, Landon Mackenzie’s oil on linen, and Howie Tsui’s wuxia-inspired lenticular lightbox Winged Assassin.
Private viewings and tours are available by appointment (contact: auction@thepolygon.ca).
