Tickets are now on sale for the Pacific Region International Summer Music Association (PRISMA) classical music festival, which will celebrate its 12th season from June 17 to 29 with a series of world-class concerts set to the theme of dance.

Taking place in Powell River, B.C., program highlights include performances of Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, Kodály’s Dances of Galanta, Bernstein’s West Side Story: Symphonic Dances, Ravel’s Bolero, Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, a Concerto Competition, and two weeks of Masterclasses & Limelight Concerts.

This year marks the return of a multimedia experience to the PRISMA Festival for the first time since 2019. The June 20 Grand Opening Concert titled “Ice, Silk and Turkish Delight” will begin with Antarctica: Life Emerging, a breathtaking visual experience created by PRISMA guest artist Marcus Goddard in collaboration with SeaLegacy and world-renowned photographer Paul Nicklen. Set to the music of Goddard played live by a chamber music ensemble, this 13-minute film transports viewers to the icy realms of Antarctica, where the delicate balance of life unfolds against a backdrop of melting glaciers and shifting landscapes. Following this journey through the icy wilderness, projection will continue with “The Silk Road” composed by Gisle Kverndokk.

After intermission, the evening will conclude with a performance of Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 5, “Turkish”. Maya Kilburn, PRISMA’s 2023 Concerto Competition winner, will be returning to PRISMA to take centre stage as soloist in this violin concerto and perform with the PRISMA Festival Orchestra under the baton of artistic director and cofounder Arthur Arnold.

World-class guest artists and students from prestigious music schools will also converge for the annual PRISMA Festival & Academy. This year marks the return of acclaimed Hungarian-born violist Máté Szücs, former principal viola with the Berlin Philharmonic who dazzled audiences and inspired students at the 2018 event. Additional guest artists include past or current members of the Montréal Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Vancouver Symphony, and Victoria Symphony, as well as orchestras in the United States, the Netherlands, and beyond.

All ticketed concerts will take place in the Evergreen Theatre at Powell River Recreation Complex. A full event schedule and tickets are available through the PRISMA Festival.
