Realwheels Theatre playwright-in-residence Kirsten Kirsch debuts Gimpy: A New Musical in virtual reading, November 25 at 7 pm
The show was developed after a national call for artists living with a disability
Realwheels Theatre presents a virtual reading of GImpy: A New Musical on November 25 at 7 pm via its website
After Vancouver’s Realwheels Theatre put out a national call for submissions for a playwright who lives with disability, Toronto’s Kirsten Kirsch was chosen to take up residency.
While the pandemic set in, the playwright worked away on her first original play, and audiences will get their first glimpse at it in a free virtual reading Wednesday night at 7 pm. Following the reading, there will be a live Q&A.
Gimpy: A New Musical follows Soren, a young Tulsa woman with a disability who dreams of becoming a Broadway musical star. But she faces a theatre world unready to cast a person with a disability, and a father who is determined that she follow a more practical career path.
Kirsch worked to develop the show with Realwheels Theatre’s Artistic Director Rena Cohen and dramaturges Liesl Lafferty, Susinn McFarlan, and Lynna Goldhar Smith. She has been co-composing songs with Darin Meilleur.
The reading will be performed by Kirsch as Soren, as well as Matt Ramer, Krystle Dos Santos, and Mason Temple.
