Reel 2 Real International Film Festival for Youth is virtual this year, and it is pleased to present several films that explore the impact of social media, racism, and discrimination.

Bringing the best films for all ages from around the world, the 2021 festival is now in its final week. It can be enjoyed in homes and classrooms across British Columbia, with streaming available until April 23.

Over the last 23 years, Reel 2 Real has focused on interactivity, and this year is no different, with a variety of filmmaking workshops modified for the times. The fest is providing classroom teachers and homeschool learners with Stay Tuned!, an online instructional video series created by BC animator Tracy Lewis, with additional animation and editing by workshop mentor Kellen R. Jackson. The series shows viewers how to set up their own animation station and animate a story.

This year, the festival’s two youth juries met on Zoom four Sundays in February and March and watched the films in competition online. Next weekend jury members will meet on Zoom again to decide on the award winners. The Junior Jury (ages nine to 12) and the Senior Jury (ages 13 to 19) will award the Most Innovative Film and Most Inspirational Film for their age group.

Plus, the Junior Jury will choose the NFB Award for Best Animated Film, while the Senior Jury will award the Edith Lando Peace Prize. Reel 2 Real’s most prestigious prize, the Edith Lando Peace Prize is a $500 cash award for the film that best “uses the language of cinema to further the goals of peace and justice.”

The jury award presentation will be delivered on April 24 online, along with pre-recorded Q&As with some of the filmmakers. The Youth Filmmakers Showcase has also been moved online.

Access for an entire household is only $40. School group access is $75, and includes educational materials, including Film Discussion Guides. More information is here.
