Final weekend of rEvolver Festival sees explorations of technology and more, to June 5
Last chances to check out Controller and Lucky, plus the final Updraft readings
The rEvolver Festival continues at The Cultch to June 5
AS UPINTHEAIR Theatre’s rEvolver Festival pulls into its final days, the new show Controller puts the power of storytelling in the audience’s hands.
It’s presented by Victoria-grown and now Vancouver-based Nebula Theatre Company, an innovative troupe that explores the intersection of science, technology, and theatre. In this case, the show explores how digital tech can be used for violence or simply be a neutral tool, depending on our choices; think killer robots or deep-fake scandals.
In Controller, four characters are driven by decisions mediated by the audience, who directly guide the outcome of the play and the timelines the characters find themselves in.
Elsewhere at the fest, which is bringing buzz to the spaces at The Cultch, Saturday night sees the final performance of Marie Barlizo’s Lucky, a raw piece inspired by the real-life tragedy of Jennifer Pan, who ordered a hit on her immigrant parents; word of mouth says it’s a compelling dissection of the Asian “model minority” stereotype.
And don’t forget the two new Updraft readings on June 5 at 4 and 5 pm; the bold new-plays-in-progress series spotlights feature Chloe Payne’s Roughhousing and Kijo Eunice Gatama’s A Hyena’s Trail, respectively.
