Emerge on Main's Sapphire Haze creates a hypnotic blend of violin and synthesized sounds, April 12
Cindy Kao and Aysha Dulong channel their sound-to-colour synesthesia into music you can “see”
Music on Main presents Emerge on Main: Sapphire Haze on April 12 at 7:30 pm at the Fox Cabaret
NATURAL AND UNNATURAL sounds meet in the mesmerizing music of Sapphire Haze, the dynamic new-music duo of Cindy Kao on violin and Aysha Dulong on electronics.
The SFU School of Contemporary Arts grads will show their stuff at Music on Main’s Emerge on Main concert at the atmospheric Fox Theatre, with music they say they hope encourages us to listen with more than just our ears.
“Both of us think and experience music visually, we both have sound-to-colour synesthesia,” Kao revealed to Stir last month, when Music on Main featured a digital salon with Sapphire Haze’s hypnotic new work Asphyxiation. “We often create based on inspirations from colours and textures, as well as physical sensations and our surrounding nature.”
The Fox show is a chance to experience their unique sound live, across five pieces.
“Blending natural strings, or any acoustic instruments, with electronics creates a new instrument in a sense,” Dulong told Stir. “I like how Cindy and I can play off of each other's musical gestures to provide a listening experience which blurs the distinction between the violin and electronics, hybridizing the sound to the point where the listener cannot decipher who is producing which sounds.”
