Bernard Cuffling reads The Selfish Giant, in Western Gold Theatre podcast starting April 1
The tale of redemption and forgiveness kicks off the Easter weekend
Western Gold Theatre streams The Selfish Giant starting April 1
A TREASURE in the Vancouver acting community is reading a beloved Oscar Wilde story as an Easter treat from Western Gold Theatre.
In the podcast, part of the troupe’s Virtual Gold series, stage veteran Bernard Cuffling will read Oscar Wilde’s classic short story The Selfish Giant—possibly the author’s greatest tale of redemption and forgiveness.
Inspired by Hans Christian Anderson, Wilde was driven to write it after the birth of his two boys—the product of the marriage that predated his trial and imprisonment for homosexuality.
In Wilde’s fairy tale, a giant walls off his garden to keep out the local children, so he can enjoy it all by himself. But gradually the giant invites the children in, and learns to cherish their joy and innocence more than any of the flowers and trees.
You can find more information and listen to the podcast reading here starting April 1.
