Shadbolt Centre for the Arts welcomes Hiromoto Ida in Birthday Present for Myself, created under Ida’s company Ichigo-Ichieh, on March 17 and 18 at 8 pm.
Inspired by the subtlety of Japanese Noh theatre expressed through western contemporary dance and music, accomplished dancer-choreographer-actor Ida plays the part of an old man raising a glass of sake to himself in celebration on his last birthday. Reminiscing about the richness of his life experience, he is visited by the spirit of his wife, played by Lindsay Clague.
Birthday Present for Myself features live musicians Nicola Everton, Sue Gould, Jeff Faragher, and Martine denBok performing an evocative original score by Russian composer Pavel Karmanov. To add to the poignant beauty of the piece, Ida will be wearing a traditional Kagekiyo Noh theatre mask created by Japanese Noh mask artist Mitsue Nakamura.
Birthday Present for Myself is being presented as part of the Vancouver International Dance Festival, which runs from February 27 to March 25. Tickets can be purchased at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts.
