Advance Theatre Festival 2024, produced by Ruby Slippers Theatre in association with the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and Playwrights Guild of Canada, takes place from February 5 to 9, with readings at 7:30 pm each night.

Curated by Tricia Trinh, the festival showcases five new works written and directed by BIPOC female-identifying and gender non-conforming artists.

This year’s lineup opens with Abi Padilla’s Grandma. Gangsta. Guerilla on February 5, which tells the story of a tough Filipino grandma who escapes her care home, and closes with Lily Chang’s innovative Taiwanese-Canadian family drama Leila Roils the Seas on February 9.

Aki Yaghoubi’s Evina’s Barrier on February 6 centres an actor who freezes up on stage; Natasha Chew presents her one-woman meta-theatrical show A Captivating Woman on February 7; and Trinh’s Attachments on February 8 delves into the nuances of an intersectional polyamorous relationship.
