Window performances and live shows: the Anvil Centre enhances Shine Bright New West

The annual event brings people together through music, magic, and merriment

Shine Bright New West is back bigger and brighter this year, with a full roster of seasonal activities and light displays throughout the city—and the Anvil Centre is adding to the excitement.

With free window performances for all to enjoy, the Anvil Centre is also announcing eight separate live performances of music, dance, and magic.

Window performances feature local musical duo Ed & Salve Dayo in an all-ages sing-along; pop and festive songs by Quayside Voices; actor Ryan Leslie Fisher’s laugh-out-loud Dandy show; and poetry and stories from New West Poet Laureate Elliott Slinn and storytellers from Culture Chats.

Then there are ticketed, seated, live theatre performances running throughout the holidays. Here are the highlights:

December 16, 7:30 to 9:30 pm: Locarno. Equal parts reverent and celebratory, the spirit of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) reverberates through the “Mexican-flavoured party starter” that is Vancouver’s Locarno.

December 19, 2 to 3:00 pm: The Kerplunks. The Canadian children’s entertainers play catchy self-penned original tunes guaranteed to get kids engaged.

December 22, 7:30 to 9:30 pm: Vitaly: An Evening of Wonders. Hailed as “one of the most unique and innovative illusionists in the world” (Chicago Tribune), Vitaly has a whole new take on magic.

Rup Sidhi of RupLoops.

December 23, 2 to 3 pm: RupLoops. RupLoops is an interactive, live looping performance and musical experience by Rup Sidhu, who uses vocal percussion and rhythmic rhymes with eclectic instruments from around the globe.

December 29, 2 to 3 pm: Seasonal Celebration with Kellie Ventriloquist and Puppets. Ventriloquist and family entertainer Kellie Haines has a BA Specialized Honours in Drama and is a multitalented entertainer with a background in theatre, clowning, singing, and dance.

December 29, 7:30 to 9:30 pm: Trilogy. Formed in 2008, Triology is a jazz trio featuring three of Canada’s most sought-after jazz musicians: Miles Black, Bill Coon, and Jodi Proznick.

December 30, 2 to 3 pm: Grupo Axé Capoeira. Founded in Recife, Brazil in 1982, Grupo Axé Capoeira is Canada’s first academy of capoeira, a Brazilian martial art dating back centuries that combines elements of dance, acrobatics, and music.

December 30, 7:30pm to 9:30 pm: Blackthorn with Shot of Scotch Vancouver Highland Dancers. Blackthorn is a Canadian Celtic folk band with an extensive repertoire rooted in the musical traditions of Scotland and Ireland as well as the folk music of English and French Canada.
