IT’S ALL IN THE instruments as Sonic Boom Festival prepares for its final weekend of concerts offered free on Youtube. Oboe, English horn, keyboards, and trombones are all on the roster.
On March 28, pianist, organist, and harpsichordist extraordinaire Angelique Po joins forces with trombonist Jeremy Berkman for a concert filmed at St. Philip’s Church. Po’s wildly versatile experience extends to everything from playing harpsichord and organ continuo with the Postmodern Camerata, Vancouver Oratorio Singers, and Abendmusi; serving as music director at Central Presbyterian Church; and composing. You’ll know Berkman as principal trombonist with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and for his work with the outstanding A Touch of Brass Quintet. The Sonic Boom featured artists’ dazzlingly diverse program of organ and brass spans John L. Baker’s Concert Movement, Mohammad Motevaselan’s And the world was still, Cheryl Olvera’s Unearthed, Trever Tunnacliffe’s Canzona, Michael Molnar’s David and Goliath, Dubravko Pajali’sc Mediation on Chorale Herzliebster Jesu, Glenn Sutherland’s Stone calling Water, Trevor Tunnacliffe’s Canzona, and Goushi Yonekura Sophons.
The previous day, March 27, don’t miss featured artist Beth Orson, who shows the wide-ranging versatility of her two instruments: oboe and English horn (both of which she’s well known for playing with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra). Orson will tackle works by the likes of Chris Albanese, Diane Berry, Jack Campbel, Henry From, and Benjamin Sigerson.
