Arts Umbrella is where young artists aged two to 22 cultivate their creativity in art and design, dance, theatre, music and film. The non-profit centre for arts education is propelled by the belief that art is powerful—powerful enough to change children’s lives in incredible ways.

Soon, Arts Umbrella will be helping young people connect with the arts at a new state-of-the-art facility. Opening April 10 at 1400 Johnston Street on Granville Island, this exciting launch represents a new chapter not just for Arts Umbrella but also for arts and culture all across Metro Vancouver: This is the first facility of its kind in North America.

A project years in the making, the 50,000 net-square-foot building will be dedicated exclusively to arts education for young people from age two to 22 for generations to come.

The striking building features 10 art and design studios as well as exhibition spaces, a 132-seat theatre, high-quality dance studios, and facilities for darkroom photography, ceramics, media art, and woodworking.

Registration is open now for Spring Session programs for young people ages three to 19. This includes Drawing & Painting, Acting, Architecture, Comedy & Improv, Cartooning, Mixed Media & Sculpture, Visual Arts Studio, Photography, Musical Theatre, and much more.

When young people connect with the arts, they gain self-confidence, develop self-discipline, and discover creative expression—qualities they carry with them for life. Arts Umbrella has a total of four locations in Vancouver and Surrey, as well as donor-funded programs at schools, community centres, neighbourhood houses, and healthcare facilities across Metro Vancouver. The organization reaches more than 24,000 young people every year, with more than 80 percent served through bursaries, scholarships, and donor-funded programs.

Health and safety are the centre’s top priority. All in-person classes follow strict health and safety protocols, including rigorous cleaning measures, physical distancing guidelines, and mandatory masks for those aged 6+, and will adhere to all public-health declarations

Spaces are limited. Program details, fees, and enrollment information can be found online at Arts Umbrella.
