The Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre in Whistler is hosting a live house post carving by master carver Xwalacktun (Rick Harry, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh/Kwakwak’wakw/Namgis) and apprentice Brandon Hall (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh/Squamish Nation) until September 3 at the entrance of the centre’s Great Hall, as part of the Salish Summer Carving Series.

Guests are encouraged to watch Xwalacktun and Hall work live from Tuesdays through Sundays. Visitors can also embark on a guided tour with a Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre ambassador at 11 am on Tuesdays through Saturdays, featuring a welcome drum song, a carving viewing, storytelling, and more.

The house post commemorates the 100th anniversary of Squamish Nation’s amalgamation, incorporating designs that honour the 16 villages which came together to form what is known today as Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation).

Part of a two-year immersive experience creating a pair of complimentary carvings, Xwalacktun and Hall’s creation will eventually stand at the centre’s entrance on Lorimer Road.
