EVERY SEASON, STUDIO 58 at Langara College presents a fan-favourite musical, and this year is no exception. From February 1 to 18, the professional theatre training program is staging Stephen Sondheim’s fantastical fairy-tale production Into the Woods.
Featuring music and lyrics by Sondheim and book by James Lapine, Into the Woods is all things deep, dark, and enchanted. The Tony Award–winning musical that premiered on Broadway in 1987 weaves together an abundance of beloved characters from the pages of Brothers Grimm fairy tales: Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, and more.
When a Baker and his wife struggle to have children because of a witch’s curse, they must set out in search of four items that will reverse the spell of infertility and grant their desire. Along the way, the audience meets other magical characters, each one of whom has a wish of their own. Though at first everyone appears to obtain what they want, the adventurers soon discover that things aren’t always as they seem when swift consequences follow.
Into the Woods was adapted into a Walt Disney Pictures–produced film in 2014, with a star-studded cast featuring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Johnny Depp, Anna Kendrick, and Chris Pine.
Over at Studio 58, the cast is made up of students in the program, including Olivia Manojlovic as Little Red Riding Hood, Emma Abbott as Cinderella, Alyson Vance as Rapunzel, and Lucy Jeffery as Jack. The exception is the Baker, who is played by 2020 Studio 58 graduate Vuk Prodanović. The actor recently portrayed the lead role in Nick Harwood’s 2023 short film The Big Draw.
Into the Woods follows on the heels of Studio 58’s February 2023 musical, another Tony Award-winner: A Chorus Line. Audiences were served the high energy of a Broadway audition in the iconic production that juxtaposes heartache and triumph, complete with polished dance numbers and glittery costumes.
Tickets to see Into the Woods and more information on the production’s cast and crew can be found online at Studio 58.
