Takács Quartet, the only chamber string ensemble to be named to the Gramophone Hall of Fame, comes to Vancouver, February 22
The renowned ensemble will be joined by esteemed English pianist Stephen Hough in Friends of Chamber Music concert
Friends of Chamber Music presents Takács Quartet in concert with Stephen Hough on February 22 at 7:30 pm at the Vancouver Playhouse.
WHEN THE Takács Quartet performs in Vancouver, it will be a momentous occasion on many levels. Presented by Friends of Chamber Music, the concert features the Canadian premiere of esteemed English pianist-composer Stephen Hough’s very first string quartet. Named String Quartet No. 1, Les Six Rencontres, the piece was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Takács.
Also on the program are Franz Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat major, Opus 76, No.4 “Sunrise” and Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A major, Op. 81.
Hough—named by the Economist as one of Twenty Living Polymaths and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire—will join the ensemble for the Dvořák quintet.
Based in Colorado and in residence at the University of Colorado, Boulder, the Takács Quartet is in its 47th season and is only chamber string ensemble in the world to be named to the Gramophone Hall of Fame.
Comprising violinists Edward Dusinberre and Harumi Rhodes, Grammy-winning violist Richard O’Neill (viola), and cellist András Fejér, the ensemble a continued role as associate artists at London’s Wigmore Hall.
The group recently won a Gramophone Classical Music Award 2021 in the Chamber category for its recording of quintets by Amy Beach and Elgar with pianist Garrick Ohlsson. The release also won the Presto Classical Recording of the Year award.
In addition to concerts in the U.K., the ensemble has many performances throughout Europe this season, including at Paris Philharmonie, Berlin Konzerthaus, and Teatro Della Pergola, Florence, while its North American stops include New York, Boston, Washington DC, Princeton, Ann Arbor, Berkeley, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Portland.
The Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest by Gabor Takács-Nagy, Károly Schranz, Gabor Ormai, and András Fejér, while all four were students.
