Still from Michael Snow’s Wavelength (1967).

The Cinematheque screens its Snow in December series, showcasing the experimental works of Toronto-born media artist Michael Snow, from December 4 to 18.

The more familiar one gets with Snow’s cinema, the easier it is to see how each film’s concept suggests a clear, direct, and possibly romantic line tethered to the medium’s origins—colours bloom as if for the first time, and pictures seem to talk.

Yet Snow was never a plain illusionist, and the enduring power of his cinema lies in how each component broke through to another place. In this limitless amphitheatre of the mind, a variety of elements—sculpture, painting, sound composition, and philosophy—all enjoy equal footing.

This three-week engagement with Snow’s films presents his epochal Wavelength, followed by a selection of more rarely screened works: Back and Forth, So Is This, A Casing Shelved, Presents, *Corpus Callosum, and A to Z.

Tickets and more details can be found at The Cinematheque.
