This month’s edition of The Dance Centre’s Discover Dance! series highlights the art of flamenco on November 9 at 12 pm with a double bill of works by Calle Verde (Maria Avila, Michelle Harding, and Peter Mole) and Jhoely Triana Flamenco at the Scotiabank Dance Centre.

These artists are in the vanguard of a wave of Vancouver creators who are experimenting with flamenco, while still honouring its traditions of technical brilliance, emotional power, and heart-stirring live music and singing.

Calle Verde’s La Faena, loosely based on a bullfight, addresses how to alter the trajectory of a narrative that seems inevitable. Triana’s solo Arboles (Trees) represents honouring one’s roots and gathering strength from the past.

The Dance Centre has presented the Discover Dance! series since 2002, highlighting the diversity of B.C.’s dance scene in an informal, accessible format.

Details and tickets to the upcoming edition are available here.
