Audiences help solve the case in Stage Fright 2: Murder at the Disco at The Improv Centre, opening September 29
1970s-inspired interactive murder mystery follows the same format as last year’s hit Stage Fright: Murder at the Improv
The Improv Centre presents Stage Fright 2: Murder at the Disco from September 29 to October 28, on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm
FOR FANS OF the board game Clue, The Improv Centre’s upcoming interactive show Stage Fright 2: Murder at the Disco delivers a similar whodunnit-style murder mystery. The best part? An audience member who’s appointed lead detective gets to solve it.
In a throwback to 1977, there’s an annual disco-til-you-drop-a-thon going down at the Diamond Disco. The competitors are prepared to bop nonstop—but the event comes to a screeching halt when one of the dancers meets an untimely fate.
Audience suggestions guide the improvisers’ hilarious antics along in an aim to solve the case. From white go-go boots and sparkly silver disco dresses, to roller skates and knee-high socks, the production’s wardrobe and vibe sit right in the pocket of seventies spunk.
“This time, we’re going with the 1970s because it’s such a dynamic time period with a lot of groovy characters, old-timey detective dramas, and themes we can explore,” says Jalen Saip, artistic director of The Improv Centre, in a release.
Saip, who’s also an improv performer herself, began her role as artistic director in June 2022. She introduced the Stage Fright format last fall, with an inaugural edition of the performance titled Stage Fright: Murder at the Improv.
Set in 1951, the production was centred on an extravagant show about to open at The Emerald Playhouse that took an unfortunate turn for the worse when the lead actor was murdered. The performance—filled with all the glitz and glamour to be expected of the showbiz era—set a fun precedent for the format’s return.
