Seagrass Music Society presents The Piano Diaries from 8 to 8:45 pm on July 20 at Burrard View Park and July 27 at Margaret Mitchell Plaza (formerly Napier Greenway)

SEAGRASS MUSIC SOCIETY is playing with the conventions of classical-music performance through The Piano Diaries, a summertime concert series offering unique programs in different East Vancouver parks.

Just like the organization’s Concerts on Tap, a classical-music brewery series, the second annual Piano Diaries series presents under-represented repertoire in non-traditional venues. The works on offer this summer fall outside of the general classical music canon and include some improvisatory music written by the artists themselves.

Pianist Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa performs at Burrard View Park on July 20, while Aslan Aslanov takes to the grassy stage at Margaret Mitchell Plaza (formerly Napier Greenway) on July 27. The series kicked off on July 13 with Róisín Adams at Clark Park.

Just as they did in 2021, the co-artistic directors of Seagrass Music Society—Molly MacKinnon, a violinist and collaborative artist, and Heather Beaty, a flutist and performing-arts professional—provided prompts to the pianists to inspire the works, cues such as “music that encapsulates your pandemic experience”, music that you didn’t like at first but grew on you”, or “music that hurts to play, in the best kind of way”. The pianists will perform on an upright acoustic Baldwin piano strategically placed in a beautiful corner of each park, with attendance free and accessible to all.

Audiences are welcome to bring snacks and refreshments, as well as a blanket, chair, or whatever else might make the experience more comfortable.
