The Wonder, adapted from the gothic novel by Emma Donoghue (The Room), is a probing psychological drama set to open at VIFF Centre November 4.

Exploring the tension between science and faith, the much-anticipated new film centres on a fierce performance from Florence Pugh. Critics are already lauding its artfully atmospheric visuals and Pugh’s acting. The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Farber has said: “The film is a striking achievement, with elegant, appropriately dark-tinged cinematography by Ari Wegner, who also shot The Power of the Dog last year. The eerie musical score by Matthew Herbert contributes to the movie’s impact. But nothing would work quite as well without the performance by Pugh.”

From Sebastián Lelio, the director of Gloria and A Fantastic Woman, The Wonder is set in mid-19th century Ireland, where 11-year-old Anna hasn’t eaten for four months. The local elders – the priest, a biggest landowner, the publican, the doctor – bring in two observers to monitor the child around the clock: a Catholic nun and an English nurse (played by Pugh). One believes in a miracle; the other has no doubt there is subterfuge going on.
