Théâtre la Seizième presents Maurice, a French-language production by Quebec’s Théâtre Bienvenue aux Dames!, at Studio 16 from April 17 to 20 at 7:30 pm. English surtitles are projected at every performance except the evening of April 19, which is followed by a meet-the-artists talk in French.

Maurice Dancause, a brilliant and hardworking economist, wakes up one morning and collapses from a stroke. He spends nine days in a coma, then four years in rehabilitation. This changes everything: his brain, his tastes, his sensibilities, even his personality. And then there’s the aphasia, his daily struggle to find words. But however limited Dancause’s access to speech may be, his thirst to communicate with the world remains powerful.

Fascinated by a remarkable true story of reconstruction and resilience, playwright-actor Anne-Marie Olivier slips into Dancause’s shoes. Every night, he needs an audience member to help him see his story through.

Tickets and more details are at Théâtre la Seizième.
