Theatre Under the Stars has announced it will alternate The Prom and Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical when it returns to Stanley Park’s historic Malkin Bowl from July 6 to August 26.

Inspired by a true story, The Prom is a comedy about four Broadway actors who try to boost their public image by helping a small-town teen. Emma’s prom has been cancelled because she planned to attend with her girlfriend. But the actors’ plan to take advantage of the cause goes sideways. Based on an original concept by Jack Viertel, it features music by Matthew Sklar, lyrics by Chad Beguelin, and a book by Bob Martin and Beguelin. The Broadway production saw a slew of Tony nominations, including Best Musical. It also saw a film version, directed by Ryan Murphy, on Netflix. Tracey Power is on board to direct and choreograph the production here.

Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is based on the author’s well-known 1988 book about the precocious five-year-old who is bullied by her parents and headmistress. She uses her love of reading and gift for telekinesis to reclaim her life. The cheeky comedy earned a precedent-setting seven Olivier Awards after its West End run in 2012. Director Stephanie Graham makes her TUTS directing debut with the production at Malkin Bowl; she’s helmed everything from Mamma Mia for Globe Theatre to Anne of Green Gables for Thousand Islands Playhouse.

TUTS’ two-show subscription packs are on sale now through May 17, with early-bird single tickets on sale May 25.
