The UBC Faculty of Arts department of theatre and film presents The Very Book Indeed from November 20 to 30 at the Frederic Wood Theatre
THE UNIVERSITY OF British Columbia’s department of theatre and film is kicking off its 2024-25 season with a production of The Very Book Indeed.
Directed by Moya O’Connell, the referential work by Paul Budra is set in 1621, seven years after Shakespeare’s death. Two enthusiastic actors struggle to assemble and print the First Folio, the original anthology of Shakespeare’s plays. Key scenes from Shakespearean classics, including As You Like It, Macbeth, and King Lear, are woven into the birth of the First Folio. Expect charm, wit, and misadventure.
An interactive digital touch-table interface of the First Folio will be available in the lobby for viewers to explore before the show and during intermission. It was developed by Patrick Parra Pennefather and UBC’s Emerging Media Lab.
Sam Cheng is in charge of scenic design, while costumes are by Madeleine Polak, lighting design is by Amy Currie, and sound design is by Damien Kwan. Michelle Lee is the stage manager.
The cast consists of Isabella Buonaiuto, Skylar Campbell, Miles Davies, Ekaterina De Boni, Paula Goldie, Yan Ching (Rainbow) Hui, Shivorn Kan, Dahlia Kerr, Baltzer Musherure, Raven Mutford, Lauren Ohh, and Alivia Sabatino.
Gail Johnson is cofounder and associate editor of Stir. She is a Vancouver-based journalist who has earned local and national nominations and awards for her work. She is a certified Gladue Report writer via Indigenous Perspectives Society in partnership with Royal Roads University and is a member of a judging panel for top Vancouver restaurants.
