Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor is the composer’s epic summation of a lifetime of creating music.
And now the Vancouver Bach Choir is preparing to take on the large-scale work, which is by turns rousing and sublime, this Easter Sunday on April 17, at 3 pm at the Orpheum.
Completed the year before Bach died, after 35 years of work, the Mass is a massive amalgamation of pieces Bach wrote throughout his lifetime. The Mass in B Minor showcases Bach’s full range of musical expression – from misery and gloom to joyful exultations of hope and happiness.
Praised as “the greatest work of music in all ages and of all people”, music lovers around the globe widely consider the mass to be one of the most extraordinary accomplishments of any composer from any era—a choral masterpiece and a jewel of the Baroque era in particular. While the majority of Bach’s work, which was written for church services, Bach wrote his Mass in B Minor to leave a musical legacy.
Music director Leslie Dala conducts the Vancouver Bach Choir, with musical support from members of the celebrated Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
An all-star lineup of soloists help bring the piece to life: soprano Rachel Fenlon, mezzo-soprano Krisztina Szabó, tenor Benjamin Butterfield, and bass-baritone Stephen Hegedus.
