In the many taverns and pubs of 18th-century Edinburgh, the musical traditions of Scottish reels and jigs rubbed shoulders with the concertos and sonatas of classical composers such as J.S. Bach.

David Greenberg (US/Canada) and David McGuinness (Scotland), Early Music Vancouver’s 2022 Artists-in-Residence, pay tribute to this diversity and creativity in the theme for this year’s Vancouver Bach Festival: Scottish Baroque and Other Traditions.

Established in 2021 by EMV’s artistic/executive Director Suzie LeBlanc, C.M., with inaugural artist Cree-Métis Two-Spirit baritone Jonathon Adams, the Artist-in-Residence program seeks to establish a connection between the visiting musician(s) and the overall community. During the course of their residency, the resident artists will perform in a number of concerts and special events including Rondeau, Ebb & Flow, A Curious Collection of Tunes, Fiddle & Figs Pub Night, Bach & Tunes: Multiple Voices for One,and Bach:Kaleidoscope/Reimaginations.

Greenberg is fluent in the playing styles of both historical performance and the folk music of Cape Breton. McGuinness divides his time between historical Scottish music and contemporary work, as well as directing the early music ensemble Concerto Caledonia.

In their performances during the festival, Greenberg and McGuinness will show the sometimes-surprising relationships between musical traditions. Featured works include violin sonatas by Georg Muffat, fiddle tunes by William Christie, partitas by J.S. Bach, and pieces written and arranged by Greenberg himself. In addition to performing as soloists in the Vancouver Bach Festival, the Artists-in-Residence will be coaching members of EMV’s Baroque Orchestra Mentorship Programme and appearing alongside the Pacific Baroque Orchestra.

From the folk music of the Scottish Highlands to the Atlantic shores of Cape Breton, the convergence of these diverse musical traditions and the infectious onstage energy of the two Davids will make you want to get up and dance!

Early Music Vancouver’s 2022 Vancouver Bach Festival runs from July 26 to August 6. Tickets are on sale starting June 1, with a 50-percent discount for persons age 34 and under.
