Artist Trevor Lai designs Vancouver Canucks’ 2022 Lunar New Year warm-up jerseys
Having grown up in Vancouver playing street hockey, the animator created a bold Year of the Tiger logo
IN HONOUR OF Lunar New Year 2022, the Year of the Tiger, artist Trevor Lai has redesigned the Vancouver Canucks’ jersey.
The Canucks fan, who grew up playing street hockey in Vancouver, swapped out the team’s iconic C-shaped orca for a tiger jumping out of water. In bold red and gold, the jersey also features references to Chinatown’s Millennium Gate with the Chinese characters that spell out the Canucks' name, 加人队. The characters are surrounded by images such as evergreen pine trees, representing durability, and bamboo trees, which symbolize strength.
The Canucks will wear the jerseys during warm-up as part of their Lunar New Year celebrations. This year, Lunar New Year falls on February 1.
Partial proceeds from the special-edition jersey and Lunar New Year merchandise will go toward Elimin8Hate, a local grassroots organization advocating for inclusivity and racial equity for Asian Canadians that also acts as a centralized community racism-reporting centre.
Now based in Shanghai, Lai is an animation director and founder of Up Studios. He produced the animated series Super BOOMi for the NHL, which is the family ambassador for the league in China.
