The Vancouver Chamber Choir brings JUBILEE to Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on March 11 at 7:30 pm.

Led by internationally renowned guest conductor Rollo Dilworth, the Vancouver Chamber Choir will be performing alongside post-secondary students from the Focus choir, an annual program that allows young singers to train with professionals.

JUBILEE will take listeners on a historically, culturally, and sonically immersive experience into the wide range of expressions found in the Black choral repertory.

The program will feature several important pieces, including The Three Dunbar Hymns by Adolphus Hailstork, which highlight the work of famed African American poet Paul Laurence Dunbar; and G. Phillip Shoultz’s arrangement of We Shall Overcome, a reminder of the significant role choral music has played in civil rights and social justice movements. Music by Black Canadian-American composer, organist, pianist, choral director, and music professor R. Nathaniel Det also features in the evening’s repertoire.

The concert concludes with two songs of hope and liberation penned by Dilworth himself: Jeremiah’s Fire!, which is written in a style reminiscent of the African American spiritual; and an arrangement of Roll, Jordan, Roll.

Tickets and more details can be found here.
