The Vancouver Chamber Choir has just announced a spring 2022 season that’s dynamic and diverse, spanning the Baroque era, Chinese cultures, and even a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

The roster includes guest artists such as conductor Jennifer Tham, and an instrumental ensemble led by Chloe Meyers, and more.

The New Year kicks off with Bright Moon 明月 on January 28 at Pacific Spirit United Church and January 29 at Fraserview Church, led by guest conductor Tham, who splits time between Vancouver and Singapore. The program pays tribute to this city’s Chinese heritage, ranging from Chen Yi’s meditation on estrangement and the cycle of the moon, Three Poems from the Song Dynasty, to Nan-Chang Chien’s I Am Flying. Jocelyn Morlock’s One Black Spike opening the concert in homage to the Chinese men who worked on the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway that connected Vancouver to Canada. The Vancouver Chinese Choir Association (温哥華國韻合唱團) joins, under the direction of their conductor, Ling Lu.

Watch for programming announcements for Just Society on February 19 at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts, a celebration of young voices with the Vancouver Youth Choir, the Argyle Secondary School Chamber Choir, and the chamber choir’s own Focus choir. The concert also unveils winning contributions of the Young Composers’ Competition.

Next up, on March 20 at the historic Orpheum Theatre, Dixit Dominus features a sparkling performance of Bach and Handel’s early choral works in a special matinee.

April 22 finds the Vancouver Chamber Choir interpreting British composer Joby Talbot’s Path of Miracles from 2005—a choral work that evokes the pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago and integrates several languages and styles.

Finally, the season wraps with the serene Nordic Sounds, May 13 at Pacific Spirit United Church, boasting a variety of maestros leading the choir as part of the annual Conductors’ Symposium.

Note that in-person attendance at all concerts is subject to provincial pandemic restrictions.

Subscription packages are available for $175 (which includes all taxes and processing fees)—a savings of 15 percent off the regular ticket price—and make a thoughtful holiday gift for the music lover on your list. You can find more information here.
