The Vancouver Folk Music Festival has just announced the schedule of acts that will be playing the Main Stage at its 47th annual edition, taking place from July 19 to 21 at Jericho Beach Park.
July 19’s Friday evening Main Stage begins with a xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Opening Welcome, followed by Côte d’Ivoire singer Dobet Gnahoré, B.C. electro-folk duo Moontricks, and Quebec singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk. Māmā Mihirangi, an Indigenous artist, songwriter, and traditional Māori Priestess from Aotearoa (New Zealand), will close the evening accompanied by The Māreikura, who meld traditional women’s dance, weaponry, instruments, and Māori martial arts with contemporary choreography.
On Saturday, July 20, Highway 61 Reimagined starts the evening off on Main Stage with a tribute to Bob Dylan’s iconic album, Highway 61, featuring ten local and visiting musicians in a concert orchestrated by Steve Dawson. Powerhouse American musician, singer-songwriter, and activist Iris DeMent takes to the stage next with music that uniquely fuses early country, gospel, and folk. The evening continues with a performance by soulful Irish singer-songwriter James Vincent McMorrow, and the mesmerizing sounds of Niger–based desert-blues group Etran De L’Aïr concludes the night’s lineup.
The last night of the festival, Sunday, July 21, launches in dynamic fashion with the rhythms of Soweto–based band BCUC, short for Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness. Popular California indie-folk duo The Milk Carton Kids perform next, followed by trailblazing folk-roots trio The Wood Brothers. Jeremy Dutcher, a classically trained JUNO and Polaris prize-winning Indigenous singer, songwriter, and activist promises to bring down the house to close this year’s festival.
