Saturday, July 16 promises to be a banner day under the sun at this year’s Vancouver Folk Music Festival, which is making its return to Jericho Beach for the first time in two pandemic years.
On the second day of the three-day fest, the mainstage kicks off at 6 pm with a set from Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, a celebrated American bluegrass band led by vocalist, songwriter, banjo player and guitarist Tuttle. The band also features mandolinist Dominick Leslie, banjoist Kyle Tuttle, fiddle player Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, and bassist Shelby Means. Their latest album, Crooked Tree, features collaborations with Sierra Hull, Old Crow Medicine Show, Margo Price, Billy Strings, Dan Tyminski, and Gillian Welch. Master picker Tuttle was the first woman to win the International Bluegrass Music Association's Guitar Player of the Year award.
That headliner is followed at 7:20 pm by Austin, Texas’s Asleep At The Wheel, a cornerstone of the American roots-music landscape for more than half a century, and led by honkytonk and western-swing legend Ray Benson.
At 8:40 pm, don’t miss artist, activist, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Allison Russell. A founding member of the acclaimed groups Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago, the Montreal native attracted major praise for her 2021 debut solo album, Outside Child, which mines the deeply moving story of her abusive childhood. She’s been nominated for three GRAMMY awards, multiple Americana UK and US awards.
And acclaimed supergroup The New Pornographers bring the night to a spectacular close at 10 pm, with A.C. Newman, Blaine Thurier, Dan Bejar, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, and Todd Fancey. Since their celebrated debut in 2000, The New Pornographers have reached near-legendary status among folks who appreciate innovative, creative and accessible—and entertaining—music.
The Vancouver Folk Music Festival runs from July 15 to 17 at Jericho Beach, with several stages active throughout the day. You can find tickets here, and more information here.
