VICO celebrates 20 years with new compositions and a range of culture-crossing guests, October 1
Ukrainian ensemble Zeellia and pipa player Qiu Xia He are just some of the special guests
The VICO Special Anniversary Concert takes place October 1 at the Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre
VICO—VANCOUVER INTER-CULTURAL ORCHESTRA—will be bringing together some of its longtime collaborators to celebrate its 20th anniversary this weekend.
Laudate Singers (with conductor Lars Kaario), soloists Amy Stephen on Celtic harp and Qiu Xia He on the Chinese pipa, and the Ukrainian ensemble Zeellia are just a few of the culture-crossing performers lending their musical artistry to the evening.
And for an ensemble that has always broken new ground, it’s fitting that the evening will also mark the premiere of a new composition—in this case, by VICO’s founding artistic director Moshe Denburg. Current artistic director Mark Armanini, meanwhile, will debut an intercultural arrangement of George Harrison’s Within You Without You.
A large-scale orchestra that brings together the isntruments and traditions of cultures from around the world—building “bridges of imagination” as the group likes to put it. Think santurs and zhengs alongside classical violins, all on equal footing, working together for a truly global sound.
On other words, the concert will not be just a celebration of two decades of making music, but—especially in this divided world—of the beauty that can come from different cultures working together through art.
