Vancouver International Flamenco Festival has just announced the lineup for its 34th edition, which showcases some of the world’s finest flamenco artists from September 12 to 22. The 2024 lineup features live performances, with both ticketed and free events.

The festival presented by Flamenco Rosario delivers exceptional, dynamic programming as it celebrates local, national, and international performers from Spain, Taiwan, Cuba, Mexico, India, and Canada.

This year’s highlights include Spain’s Compañía Marco Flores performing the Canadian premiere of Rayuela at the Vancouver Playhouse on September 13 and 14. Inspired by Julio Cortázar’s novel Rayuela (which translates to Hopscotch in English) in which Argentinian intellectual Horacio Oliveira seeks elusive answers, the piece mirrors life’s journey through creativity and self-discovery. In this cosmic dance, words guide audiences and performers alike through the labyrinth of human imagination on a quest for understanding.

Plus, on September 15, the musicians from Compañía Marco Flores—guitarist Jose Tomás Jiménez and vocalist Jose Valencia—are hosting an exclusive concert at St. James Community Square’s Mel Lehan Hall.

Another performance to look forward to on the lineup is Èbe by La Sporée / Sarah Bronsard on September 18, an exploration of breath and communication which unfolds around a choir of five accordion-robots with flamenco choreography. There is also La Forastera by Lia Grainger of Flamencolía Dance Company on September 19, a moving personal journey told through narration, documentary footage shot in Spain, projections, soundscapes, and live flamenco music and dance. Plus, flute and bansuri player Lara Wong and guitarist Melón Jiménez present their vibrant new project titled Confluencias on September 20. All three shows are at the Waterfront Theatre.

There are also masterclasses throughout the festival hosted by Flamenco Rosario’s artistic director Rosario Ancer, Marco Flores, and Deborah Dawson, along with free flamenco showcases at the Granville Island Picnic Pavilion on September 21 and 22.

Opening night of the festival at the Vancouver Playhouse features a special presentation in which Ancer will honour Iminah Kani, the inaugural winner of the Victor Kolstee Award.

Tickets to all festival events are now officially on sale. For more details, visit Vancouver International Flamenco Festival.
