The Vancouver International Flamenco Festival has announced its 2022 live lineup of local, national, and international flamenco artists—appearing at various venues from September 3 to 25.

The 32nd edition of the fest features live performances, with both ticketed and free events.

Headlining the event is Spain’s Mucha Muchacha, a major work that started with research into women artists of the “Generation of the 27th”—a highly influential group of poets and other artists known as Las Sinsombrero. The production then evolved into an epic contemporary dance project with powerful, physically pummelling movement, focused on ideas of empowerment, determination, voice, participation, freedom, and cooperation. The show happens September 16 at the Norman Rothstein Theatre.

From Calgary, Anastassiia Alexander hits the Waterfront Theatre on September 22 with The Machination of Memories Suppressed. Based on Alexander’s own poem "Maquina de Olvido", the performance contains elements of spoken word as well as a loop station with the dance.

The next night, don’t miss Montreal’s Kara Miranda at the same venue, with the production Sombras/Shadows. With live music and dance, the show features visual projection, using shadows to explore the interplay between light and dark, inspired by the concepts of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung and his idea of the Shadow Self.

Vancouver’s own beloved Flamenco Rosario, who organizes the fest, takes to the Waterfront stage on September 24 with Nuevo III—a collection of refreshing new choreographies by Ballet Nacional de España’s leading dancer and award-winning choreographer Albert Hernandez, as well as Granada’s esteemed Sara Jimenez and local flamenco icon Rosario Ancer.

Hernandez will also join Flamenco Rosario on stage, presenting three of his works with Madrid’s Irene Tena Mora, including his award-winning work Loca.

Prior to those shows, free flamenco events at Granville Island’s Picnic Pavilion will get you in the mood on September 3 and 4. Shows run each day from 1 pm until 6 pm with local Vancouver and Victoria flamenco dance and music artists. Look for such troupes as Mozaico Flamenco, Jhoely Triana, and Michelle Harding and Calle Verde. Note that there is a free “taster” workshop on September 4 for children from noon to 12:20 pm, and for adults from 12:20 pm to 12:50 pm before shows start.

As usual, the visiting artists will also be holding master classes.
