The Coastal Jazz & Blues Society’s Artists in Residence program was created to spotlight the individual work of select artists while offering them the opportunity to connect with local talent and dedicated Vancouver International Jazz Festival audiences.
Coastal Jazz is partnering with Western Front and Talking Stick Festival this year to host Sakina Abdou, Shahzad Ismaily, and DJ O Show as the Artists in Residence. Each musician will make multiple appearances throughout the 10-day festival in the form of artist talks, collaborations, workshops, and outreach activities.
Ismaily is a Brooklyn-based musician, composer, engineer, and founder of Figure 8 Recording. He has recorded and performed with a diverse crew of artmakers, including Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, and more.
Based in Lille, France, saxophonist-flutist Abdou explores free improvisation and experimental contemporary music. Of Franco-Nigerian origin, her multifaceted sound alternates between suspenseful, graceful, quiet, and surprising.
DJ O Show—a.k.a. Orene Askew—is an Afro-Indigenous member of the Squamish Nation who embraces and embodies teachings from both her cultural backgrounds. She stays true to her love of hip hop and R&B, laying down beats that pack dance floors from Vancouver to Vegas.
Events to look forward to include individual artist talks from all three musicians: Ismaily on June 24, DJ O Show on June 26, and Abdou on June 27, all at Western Front at 3 pm. Six diverse concerts will also take place from June 27 to 30 at various venues.
