Vancouver Opera is opening its 65th season this fall with a dazzling production of Johann Strauss II’s Die Fledermaus. This operatic masterpiece, filled with wit, charm, and unforgettable melodies, will set the stage for an extraordinary season of performances.
Die Fledermaus, a comic operetta set in the 1960s, is synonymous with opulence, laughter, and revelry. Its story revolves around a grand masquerade ball, making it the perfect choice for celebrating Vancouver Opera’s impressive milestone. The production will bring the festive atmosphere to life with a stunning cast of international and local talents, breathtaking sets, and lavish costumes.
Ashlie Corcoran is returning to Vancouver Opera to direct her second season opener in a row, having helmed the fantastical Magic Flute in 2023. Her visionary approach to this timeless classic will ensure that every performance is infused with energy, creativity, and a deep understanding of the operetta’s comedic elements.
Vancouver Opera music director Jacques Lacombe is conducting the high-spirited score, which he has previously performed in major opera houses spanning the Metropolitan Opera and Monte Carlo Opera. His expertise and dynamic conducting style will elevate the musical experience, making it a highlight of the season.
Die Fledermaus features an incredible cast of principal singers including Lara Ciekiewicz (Le nozze di Figaro), Mireille Lebel (Orfeo ed Euridice, La voix humaine), Owen McCausland (The Magic Flute), Peter Barrett (Faust, Carmen), and Giles Tomkins (Don Giovanni). Making their company debut with Vancouver Opera are Claire de Sévigné and John Chest. They will be joined by members of the Vancouver Opera Chorus and the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
Performances of Die Fledermaus will take place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on October 26 at 7:30 pm (an extra-special night which doubles as Vancouver Opera’s 65th Anniversary Launch Party); October 31 at 7:30 pm (audience members are encouraged to come in costume to this ultimate Halloween bash); November 2 at 7:30 pm; and November 3 at 2 pm.
