The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Rachmaninoff, Mahler & The Mermaid at the Orpheum on May 9 and 10 at 8 pm, as part of the Assante Vancouver Centre Masterworks Diamond Series.
Grammy Award–winning American baritone Thomas Hampson joins conductor Andrey Boreyko and the VSO in selections from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn). The evening opens with the haunting dreamlike sounds of Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, and draws to a close with Zemlinsky’s shimmering Die Seejungfrau (The Mermaid), inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s evocative fairy tale.
Hampson’s operatic repertoire consists of more than 80 roles, while his discography includes more than 170 albums. Join the celebrated performer on May 8 for an intimate Pyatt Hall masterclass as he coaches advanced young vocalists in front of an audience. See the VSO School of Music’s website for more information.
