Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Symphonie fantastique on May 10 and 11 at 8 pm at the Orpheum as part of the Cadillac Masterworks Gold Series, and on May 12 at 7 pm at the Bell Performing Arts Centre as part of the Surrey Nights Series endowed by Werner and Helga Höing.

In this concert, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s music director Otto Tausk is joined by British composer and musicologist Paul Rissmann as they discover and uncover the secrets to Hector Berlioz’s incomparable Symphonie fantastique. Completely revolutionary at its premiere in 1830, the piece is the product of an opium-induced dreamscape.

Audiences will dive deep into Berlioz’s great musical drama and discover its lasting power to surprise and astonish. The work will be presented alongside contemporary German-Canadian composer Michael Oesterle’s Entr’actes, which evokes the flurry of activity felt during a concert intermission.

Tickets and more details are available via the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
