Tan Dun conducts his epic choral work Buddha Passion at the VSO, November 8 and 9

Award-winning artist’s piece inspired by Chinese and Sanskrit texts tells of six stories from the life of the Buddha, and of a prince’s path to enlightenment

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra is set to showcase Tan Dun’s Buddha Passion at the Orpheum on November 8 and 9 at 8 pm, with presenting sponsor Burgundy Asset Management Ltd.

Oscar and Grammy Award-winning composer Dun will take to the Orpheum podium to conduct the Canadian premiere of his epic choral work of love and compassion, Tan Dun’s Buddha Passion, inspired by Chinese and Sanskrit texts. Audiences will witness the journey of a prince on the path of enlightenment and experience six stories from the life of the Buddha, all set at the foot of the Himalayas.

For this show, the musicians of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra will be joined by the UBC University Singers and Choral Union. Featuring orchestra, six percussionists, five vocal soloists, and a dancing pipa player, the concert promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime musical event of overwhelming power and beauty.
