This year’s Vancouver Writers Fest takes place from October 21 to 27 across Granville Island and in Lower Mainland schools, and more than 120 local and international authors are set to partake in 85 exciting events.

Tickets are still on sale for several events, including a special discussion with author Malcolm Gladwell and CBC’s The National host Ian Hanomansing on October 14, which takes place in the lead-up to the festival’s main programming. Twenty-five years after the publication of Gladwell’s first book, The Tipping Point, he modernizes his lessons around the dissemination of ideas in Revenge of the Tipping Point.

Vancouver Writers Fest officially kicks off on October 21 with A Grand Opening: Finding Joy Amid Turmoil, which offers reflections on seeking joy during challenging times from literary masters Andrey Kurkov, Heather O’Neill, Kim Thúy, Tanya Talaga, Bill Richardson, John Vaillant, Sadiya Ansari, and Roddy Doyle, with host Elamin Abdelmahmoud.

With such a variety of different events to choose from, highlights include Nita Prose in Conversation on October 22, in which the internationally bestselling mystery author dissects the creation of her compelling main characters in The Maid and The Mystery Guest; Knowing Who We Are (And Who We Can Be) with Niigaan Sinclair and Tanya Talaga on October 24; and Transcendent Fiction on October 25, which invites Indigenous authors Billy-Ray Belcourt, Conor Kerr, and Amanda Peters to share their original approaches to modern-day writing.

Still more events deliver unique takes on the literary world, whether it be career reflections at Roddy Doyle in Conversation on October 26, healthcare and housing-crisis discussions at Rebuilding Pillars of Society on October 26, or a deep-dive the pulse-racing world of thrillers in Chiller Thriller on October 27.

Highway to the Danger Zone: Lyrics Night jazzes up festival programming on October 25; host Abdelmahmoud returns to lead a troupe of beloved authors through dramatic readings of classic songs from movie soundtracks.

After the main programming concludes, don’t miss a post-festival event on November 19 with neuroscientist, musician, and bestselling author Daniel Levitin, featuring musical interludes by Vancouver’s Chor Leoni.

Tickets for all events can be purchased through the Vancouver Writers Fest.
