The Vancouver International Dance Festival is in full swing, with a rich roster of free or by-donation performances happening at KW Studios, at 111 West Hastings Street.

March 9 to 12, there’s even a world premiere at the intimate KW Production Studio space: Montreal artist Manuel Roque debuts his SIERRANEVADA, inspired in part by “collapsology”—a multidisciplinary field of study dealing with the potential collapse of our post-industrial civilizations.

The next week, Montreal maverick Benoît Lachambre is on deck in the KW Studios and Woodward’s Atrium with All in All, a a journey that brings Lebanese, Mexican, and Canadian artists together in an ambitious and vibrant work, March 18 to 20.

March 24 to 26 in the KW Atrium Studio, Olivia Shaffer’s Senescence sheds light on the final stage of life, when there is often an unravelling of one’s autonomy. The dance artist drew on the experience of caregiving for her father, who had dementia and Parkinson’s disease, and combines movement with poetic spoken word, and electronic and live music.

On those same dates in the KW Production Studio, Toronto’s Tiger Princess Dance Projects presents In Search of Holy Chop Suey and Weave…part one. In the former, artist Yvonne Ng mines everything from modern dance to kung fu legends and wild animals; in the latter, the Singapore-born artist uses a contemporary dance framework to braid her mother’s life with her own, spanning two countries, several cultures, and the immigrant experience.
