Christopher Gaze joins A VSO Christmas Story in free streamed concert December 19 at 2 pm
An assuring voice reads from A Christmas Carol while musicians play seasonal gems
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents A VSO Christmas Story at 2 pm on December 19
PICTURE THIS: Bard on the Beach artistic director Christopher Gaze, cozied up to a crackling fire in a comfy arm chair at the Vancouver Club. In his familiar, reassuring voice, he’s reading you from Charles Dickens’ classic story A Christmas Carol, while members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra bring the story to life through musical selections.
Are you feeling about 2020 Christmas yet?
The VSO is offering the concert, conducted by its assistant conductor Andrew Crust, for free this Saturday afternoon, as part of a three-concert gift to the community.
This program includes such seasonal favourites as Handel's Messiah, the Fantasia on Greensleeves by Ralph Vaughan Williams, musical depictions of a sleighride by Mozart and by Prokofiev, a series of dances drawn from Peter Warlock's Capriol Suite, and Variations on The Huron Carol by the Canadian composer Kelly Marie Murphy. And just wait until you hear the harp solo on the carol Bring a Torch, Jeanette Isabelle.
You can tune in here to watch it. We recommend lighting your own crackling fire and settling into your own armchair.
