Trumpet legend Jens Lindemann takes the Chan Centre stage in special VSO concert January 9

The Canadian Brass alumnus performs Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto amid a versatile program

The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra has announced it’s kicking off the new year with trumpet legend Jens Lindemann.

In a concert at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on January 9 at 2 pm, he’ll lead the VSO in a thrilling and virtuosic performance of music that spans eras, from the classical to the 20th century. (He also performs the night before at Surrey’s Bell Performing Arts Centre.)

On the program: the 1796 Trumpet Concerto by Joseph Haydn—an uplifting favourite and a monumental work in the brass repertoire; Toy Symphony by Leopold Mozart, father and teacher to Wolfgang; The Unanswered Question by late American modernist Charles Ives; and Dreaming of Masters by contemporary Canadian composer Alan Gilliland.

The German-born Canadian Brass alumnus is one of the most celebrated trumpet talents on the planet, and has played for ensembles from chamber groups to jazz bands around the globe. Trained at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and McGill University in Montreal, he has taken the stage as a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall, the 2010 Olympics, the Rose Bowl, and London’s Last Night of the Proms. He is the first classical brass artist to be awarded the Order of Canada.
