The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra presents Symphony at Sunset at Sunset Beach Park on July 2 at 7 pm and Symphony in the Park at Deer Lake Park on July 16 at 6 pm

THE VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is heading back to the great outdoors.

The third annual Symphony at Sunset at Sunset Beach Park, hosted by the Vancouver Park Board, kicks off at 7 pm with a prelude performance by the VSO School of Music’s Intermezzo and Sinfonietta ensembles performing music from films such as The Incredibles and Kung Fu Panda. Starting at 8 pm, the VSO, led by maestro Otto Tausk, will perform as the sun descends, opening with an orchestra arrangement of the “Coast Salish Anthem” gifted to the VSO by the grandson of the late Chief Dan George.

The evening’s remaining repertoire centres on a Latin Nights theme. Along with music from Bizet’s beloved opera Carmen, the program features works by Argentinian composer Astor Piazzolla, who revolutionized tango music into a new form, nuevo tango. Joining the VSO will be Dutch musician Carel Kraayenhof, an internationally acclaimed master of the bandoneón (think an Argentinian accordion made specifically for tango music), whom Piazzolla specifically wrote music for.

On July 16, the VSO returns to Deer Lake Park for the 33rd annual Symphony in the Park, hosted by the City of Burnaby. Following a 6 pm performance by the VSO School of Music’s Azalea Chinese Music Ensemble, at 7 pm theVSO and conductor Andrew Crust will offer a mixed program that includes Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story,Main Theme from E.T. by John Williams, and Fantasy Overture” from Tchaikovsky’s Romeo & Juliet.

At both concerts, event grounds will be open all day for picnic-goers to set up early, with space available on a first-come-first-served basis, and food trucks will be on-site. Rehearsals by the evening’s performers will take place in the afternoon for people to enjoy music throughout the day. If you’re bringing your own seat, the VSO recommends low chairs to not obstruct the view of other audience members.
