Pictures at an Exhibition goes to the brass, October 23 at 7:30 p.m.
Otto Tausk conducts VSO horn masters in Elgar Howarth’s shiny arrangement of Mussorgsky’s beloved piece
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra streams Pictures at an Exhibition via the Concert Hall on October 23 at 7:30 pm
Elgar Howarth is a well-known English conductor and composer, but he also happens to be a trumpeter who grew up in a family of brass-band players. The result is that he’s made a huge contribution to the brass repertoire—including a rendition of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition that will blow your socks off.
The piece, of course, was originally written as a showcase for the piano. Just wait until you see what Howarth does with its different movements. The Russian suites really were based on pictures, those by artist, architect, and designer Viktor Hartmann.
It'll be performed as the next edition of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra's digital the Concert Hall series. VSO maestro Otto Tausk conducts. Stick around afterwards, when the musicians discuss the work--after they catch their breath, of course.
