Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Jill Barber, Jocelyn Morlock among B.C. artists nominated for 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards

Vetta Chamber Music, Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra, and Mohamed Assani also nab nods

SEVERAL B.C. ARTISTS and acts have earned nominations for the 2021 Western Canadian Music Awards.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids have been nominated in the Indigenous Artist of the Year category, alongside PIQSIQ from the Northwest Territories. Manitoba’s Don Amero, Mattmac, and Sebastian Gaskin were also nominated. t

A hip-hop duo of Haisla descent made up of Yung Trybez and Young D, Snotty Nose Rez Kids also made the list in the Rap & Hip Hop Artist of the Year category, as did B.C.’s Boslen and Junk. They share nominations with Alberta’s ]Mouraine and Sargeant X Comrade.

It proved to be a B.C. sweep in the category of Classical Composer of the Year. Jocelyne Morlock, Jeffrey Ryan, Edward Top, Katerina Gimon, and T. Patrick Carrabre were all nominated.

Vetta Chamber Music is among the local nominees for Classical Artist or Ensemble of the Year. Joining the organization in the category sponsored by Canadian Music Centre are B.C.’s Christopher Tyler Nickel and PEP (Piano and Erhu Project), Saskatchewan’s Véronique Mathieu, and Alberta’s Land's End Ensemble with Laura Hynes and Karl Hirzer.

Jill Barber has been nominated as Francophone Artist of the Year, a category sponsored by APCM (Association des professionnels de la chanson et de la musique). She’s joined by Éemi and Ponteix from Saskatchewan and Manitoba’s Kelly Bado and Sala.

For Global Artist of the Year, Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra shares a spot on the nominees’ list with Alberta’s Notas de 4 and Rubim de Toledo and Manitoba’s Casimiro Nhussi and Kelly Bado.

Vancouver Inter-Cultural Orchestra shows up once more, next on the list of nominees for Instrumental Artist of the Year, alongside B.C. sitarist Mohamed Assani and multi-instrumentalist Quin With One N. This category also features Factor Eight from Saskatchewan and Alberta’s Rubim de Toledo

Three B.C. names earned a nomination for Jazz Artist of the Year: Michael Kaeshammer, BPM Trio, and David Restivo. Also on the list are Manitoba’s Jocelyn Gould and Will Bonness.

Other B.C. artists recognized in the nominees’ announcement include Terminal Station and Blue Moon Marquee for Blues Artist of the Year; Olivia Penalva and Sam Lynch for BreakOut Artist of the Year; and Seeka Sings for Children’s Artist of the Year.

Four B.C. artists made the list for Electronic & Dance Artist of the Year (Astrocolor, Mat the Alien, So Sus, and Takis).

IAMTHELIVING x Teon Gibbs and XL The Band were both nominated in the R&B Artist of the Year category.

The Washboard Union is in the running for Recording of the Year, while the Pack a.d. and Shred Kelly are up for Rock Artist of the Year (sponsored by Torque Brewing).

Aidan Knight has been nominated as Songwriter(s) of the Year, a category sponsored by the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).                        

In the Visual Media Composer of the Year category, Chroma Mixed Media – Naona and Deanna Peters/Mutable Subject - Sound Migrations earned nominations.

Allswell earned a nomination for Spiritual Artist of the Year.                

Snotty Nose Rez Kids’ video "Screaming Indian" earned Alfonso Chin a nod in the Video Director of the Year category. Stephano Barberis is nominated in this category sponsored by Manitoba Film & Music for the Washboard Union’s “Country Thunder".

The only category where B.C. wasn’t represented was Country Artist of the Year.
